Privacy at Gurbani Updesh

Updated October 10, 2026

Gurbani Updesh provides a free recording library and moderated community conversations. You do not need an account to listen or browse.

Listening and downloads

The mobile apps store playlists, listening positions, your listening history (the recordings you played recently), preferences, and downloaded recordings on your device. The website keeps the same listening history in your browser. You can remove single recordings or clear the history at any time in My Library. We do not add advertising or analytics SDKs. Watch embeds YouTube’s player; YouTube may show ads and processes playback and device information under Google’s privacy policy. Videos require an internet connection and are not downloaded by the app.

On iPhone and iPad, temporary copies of previously loaded collection listings and search results can be shown when a connection is unavailable. Local app data may be included in your device backups, depending on your backup settings; downloaded recordings are excluded from backup.

On Android, temporary copies of previously loaded collection listings and search results can be shown when a connection is unavailable. Saved playlists and downloaded recordings are available offline. The Android app excludes its data from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.

Optional account sync

If you sign in by email, we store your email address, sign-in sessions, reading place, listening positions, listening history, playlists, and playback speeds on our server so you can continue across devices. Sign-in emails are sent through our email provider. Downloaded audio and device download preferences stay on your device. You can continue using the app without signing in.

Each email has a separate library. Signing out disconnects that device; it does not delete the account’s saved library. To request deletion of your account and its associated data, choose Request account deletion in Sync across devices in the app, or contact us using the email address associated with the account. We process requests manually within seven days and confirm completion by email. The app also shows the completion time in your request receipt. We retain synced data until you delete it or request account deletion; deletion records are kept as needed to prevent an offline device from restoring removed items.

Reading Mode

Reading Mode is optional; Solo reading does not use it. When you use it, our Reading Mode service stores the name you enter, the groups you create or join and their members’ names, invitation records, and each group’s reading history: the Ang, an optional line, start and end times, and who read. Access tokens for your identity are stored on the service only as hashes.

Your Reading Mode identity is saved in this browser. A group’s owner can remove members or delete the group and its history. To remove your Reading Mode data, email us using the address below. You can also remove it from this browser yourself: in Reading Mode, choose Remove Reading Mode from this browser, or choose Clear all data on this browser in Your place or My library. Groups and history stay on our service until they are deleted.

Conversations and reports

If you submit a message, we receive your display name and message. An admin reviews it before it becomes public. Approved messages and replies are visible on the website and in the app. Please do not include private contact details or other sensitive information in a public message. Reports of inappropriate content are private and visible to administrators.

We use network information, including a salted hash of the submitting IP address, to limit spam and enforce administrator blocks. An opaque author identifier lets app users hide messages from a sender without exposing the IP address. People sharing a network may be affected by the same moderation block.

Service providers and technical records

Data sent between the mobile apps and our library, media and community servers is encrypted in transit using HTTPS.

Our website, API and media hosting providers process requests needed to deliver the service. Those requests include your IP address and the requested page or recording. Server logs and moderation records may be retained for security, troubleshooting and abuse prevention. We also use server logs to calculate aggregate service-usage statistics, including visitor counts based on distinct IP addresses, page and API requests, recorded media requests, popular paths and bandwidth. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising.

Your choices

You can remove playlists and downloads in the app, hide community senders, and report messages. To request removal of a public message or other information you submitted, email us with the conversation link or enough detail to locate it. We may need to verify the request. We retain community content while it remains useful to the conversation, unless removed through moderation or an appropriate deletion request; security records may be kept where needed to prevent abuse.
